Archbishop Jurgis Matulaitis (1871–1927) re-established the Marian Order. This member of the Vilnius Diocese was an Ordinary and Apostolic Visitator for Lithuania whose shepherd-like holiness spread through national contempt and the early years of a heated environment of Bolshevism. Matulaitis was beatified in 1987 as Lithuania celebrated 600 years of Christianity. His remains are in the chapel of the Lesser Basilica in Marijampolė. In early July, an annual eight day celebration takes place in his honor, and the Church celebrates him on July the 12th.
